![]() It’s healthier to say, “I’d like to be able to help them out” instead of “I should help them out”. Guilt BeatingĪlso called shoulding on yourself, guilt beating is when you think words like should, must, ought, or have to to most situations. Feelings are your perception of certain situations. Feelings are very complex and often based upon our past stories. This occurs when you believe your negative feelings without ever questioning them. Taking someone’s silence as “They’re mad at me” is a perfect example of mind reading. ![]() This happens when you believe that you know what other people are thinking, even though they haven’t told you directly. ![]() When you go into a conversation assuming that the other person won’t like what you have to say, you change the way you communicate to usually make it come true. This is where you predict the worst possible outcome to any situation. Its getting 100 reviews back and all you can focus on are the 4 bad ones, forgetting about the 96 positive ones. This occurs when your thoughts reflect only the bad in a situation and ignore any of the good things. All-or-never words like always, never, no one, every one, every time, everything are usually wrong. This happens when you think something that happened will “always” repeat itself, or that you’ll “never” get what you want. By catching what the negativing thinking pattern is, we start to have the ability to chose our responses in life and live a little more productively. ![]() Even though we slip into each one of these at some time or another, we usually gravitate towards one or two main ANTS in our lives. To find out what is really true you need to question your thinking patterns.īelow are 9 of the the most common ANTS people have. You’re not really choosing how to respond to a situation, its being chosen for you by your bad brain habits. Sugar is addictive, pro-inflammatory, and associated with depression, obesity, diabetes, and dementia.Īnyway, those are the strategies I shared with her. Most negative thinking is automatic (Automatic Negative Thoughts-ANTS) and goes unnoticed. They activate parts of the brain responsible for ANTs and trigger a blood-sugar roller coaster. (In a future post, I'll walk through the mechanics of how to live your values.) Is it possible that your ANTS are messages from your subconscious that you are not living your values? People who strive to live their values have fewer ANTs and have an easier time discarding them. Is it true or just junk? Like physical mail, many thoughts are junk and should be dropped in the trash. Hold the message in your hand just as you would hold a letter you got in the mail. ONE: Treat each of these thoughts as a short message from your brain. So, here are the three remedies that I shared with my friend. Unfortunately, she's created a vicious cycle where her ANTs push her to procrastinate, reinforcing her ANTs. Her goal is to become a professional musician, but thoughts like "You'll never be good enough" derail her progress and kill her motivation to practice. My friend is struggling with ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) and self-doubt. Do not ask for upvotes, money, donations, or any form of payment.
